Planning Team Leader

Consensus Planning, a New Mexico corporation, is a planning, landscape architecture, and urban design consulting firm committed to providing services of the highest quality to both the public and private sectors. The firm is located in Downtown Albuquerque. Over the past 33 years, we have built the firm on a strong and unwavering reputation for responsive customer service and hands-on project management. Consensus Planning is the leader in comprehensive planning, land use planning, and public engagement for New Mexico municipalities, counties, and tribal governments. We have an extensive portfolio of community planning documents tailored to community goals, including Comprehensive Plans, Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Master Plans, Neighborhood Plans, Affordable Housing Plans, Land Development Codes, Feasibility Studies, and Facility Plans. We have completed well over 100 community plans over the past 33 years.

Our planning group is led by two Principals, who have worked together since 1994. We are accustomed to working on long range community planning projects, as well as current development projects. We pride ourselves on our responsiveness to client’s requests and needs, and our ability to perform whatever task is required.

Planning Team Leader:

Consensus Planning is seeking an energetic and experienced Planner to join our team of planners and landscape architects at our office in Downtown Albuquerque. We are looking for someone who will be a thoughtful and innovative leader that is passionate about planning for our local and regional communities across New Mexico. The ideal candidate will continue our strong planning leadership role in New Mexico and expand into new markets; new technologies; mentor our existing planning team; and demonstrate our core values – purpose, integrity, enthusiasm, and innovation.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning or Urban Planning.
  • 10 to 15 years of professional experience, including managing planning projects and multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
  • Experience in marketing and business development.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet internal and external project deadlines.

Core Technical Skills:

  • Excellence in technical writing.
  • Excellence in communication, public speaking, and facilitation of public meetings.
  • Understanding and competency in all facets of community planning, preparation of long-range documents, qualitative and quantitative methods, and zoning entitlements.
  • Familiarity with Albuquerque, New Mexico communities, and state enabling legislation (e.g. Comprehensive Planning, Zoning, Subdivision, Affordable Housing Act, Metropolitan Redevelopment Act, etc.).
  • Practitioner of active listening.
  • Strong ability to develop, nurture, and maintain client relationships.
  • Proficiency in software applications – InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Bluebeam.

Leadership/Management:

  • High degree of confidence and charisma.
  • Strong track record and past performance.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and clients.
  • Exhibit passion for planning, particularly long-range planning.
  • Supervise, co-manage, and mentor planning staff.
  • Strong marketing skills.

Advancement/Leadership:

  • The position will start as an Associate and will be part of the Management Team.
  • Work hours are anticipated to average 50 hours a week.
  • Salaried position with quarterly bonuses that are commensurate with effort and results and includes a monthly car allowance.
  • The successful candidate is anticipated to grow into an ownership and leadership role over the next 2 to 3 years.

Landscape Architect

Consensus Planning is seeking an ambitious Landscape Architect to join our design team at our Downtown Albuquerque office. We are looking for an individual who can visualize building and leading an authentic landscape architectural practice that builds upon and grows the firm’s reputation of excellence in landscape design. The ideal candidate recognizes the complexity and joy of the profession of landscape architecture, has excellent technical skills, strives for design excellence, and enjoys business and professional development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree (preferred) in landscape architecture or related field.
  • 5-7+ years of relevant experience in a landscape architectural firm or multi-disciplinary office environment.
  • Licensed Landscape Architect.
  • Expertise in the preparation of construction documents (knowledge of construction methods,plant materials, specifications, and irrigation design).  
  • Experience in construction administration including responding to contractor inquiries in written and verbal form.
  • Experience managing projects including developing scopes of work, project schedules, budgets, and cost estimates at the planning, conceptual, schematic, and working drawing stages. 
  • Experienced and confident communicating with Clients and diverse professional disciplines. 
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet internal and external project deadlines.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite (experience rendering in Sketchup and Lumion a plus).

Additional Skills and Experience (desired, but not required):

  • Ability to market, secure, and manage work from new and existing clients to help grow the landscape architecture practice within the firm.
  • Prepare and execute creative community engagement strategies. Lead user group and community workshops.
  • Experience in the development and verbal delivery of presentations. 
  • Experience and knowledge of regulatory requirements for landscape plans.
  • Sustainable Sites or LEED accredited professional.
  • Active participation in community organizations such as ASLA, Think Trees, Land and Water Summit or other organizations that contribute to our profession and social well-being.
  • Spanish language skills
